Obituary of Walter J. Gillen

Walter Joseph Gillen, 83, passed away at Holy Name Hospital on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.  Born to Martin Vincent Gillen Sr. and Clara Gillen (nee Lyons) in Jersey City, NJ.  Mr. Gillen lived most of his life in Jersey City before moving to Ridgefield Park, NJ.  Mr. Gillen is a veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving in the United States Army from 1953-1956.  He attended Jersey City State College, before enjoying a long career with Hills Bros. Coffee.  He retired as a foreman and proud member of Teamsters Union Local 641 in 1991.  After retirement, Walter enjoyed  a 20 year career at Felician College in Lodi, NJ.  Walter was beloved by both students and staff. Predeceased by beloved Felician Sisters Teresa and Tarci.

Mr. Gillen is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Eileen Pontius Gillen of Ridgefield Park.  His beloved children: Eileen Gillen DeMaria and her husband Joseph, Diane Gillen Davidson and her husband Harry, Michael Pontius and his wife Dana, Judy Pontius Coppola and her husband Craig.  Walter was extremely proud of and deeply loved his beautiful grandchildren and great-granddaughter.  Margaret DeMaria Ratliff and husband Kristopher, Katherine, Jane, Laura, Steven, Matthew, Victoria, Isabella, Michael, Christian and precious great-granddaughter Eleanor Anne Ratliff.

Mr. Gillen is also survived by his sister Claire Mack, and his brothers Charles and Francis Gillen.  He was predeceased by his brothers Martin and Thomas.  He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews and Lisa White, her husband Kyle and their children.

Mr. Gillen will be laid to rest in a private service at Madonna Cemetery in Fort Lee, NJ on Thursday, April 23.  Family and friends will be invited to gather and celebrate Walter’s life at a Memorial Service on a future date.
