When I first saw Gary as he walked into room four twenty-two a four bed unit here at Regency Grande Post-Acute, Rehab & Nursing Center I never thought I would chronicle such a lasting memorable relationship.
Room four twenty-two became my introduction to nursing home life, with another fellow named Ted. Ted was a gifted gabber. He would tell interesting and funny stories based on his recent kitchen fall that landed him here at Regency for Physical Therapy (PT).
In a few days we became somewhat of a wisecracking gang of fools, critiquing an endless march of various nurses’ aides, housekeepers and others whom worked here.
Then… in came Dwight, filling the fourth bed.
Dwight was a Viet Nam veteran who saw quite a bit of action but due to his stature, somewhat of a character in his own right. As days passed we learned from Dwight that the Viet Cong taught the jungle monkeys to throw their feces at the American soldier’s uniform. Therefore, monkeys followed Dwight’s contingent through the jungle throwing (you guessed it) at our men. So their solution became (yup… you guessed it again) a continuous “monkey shoot”. Before long our soldiers began preparing meals with fresh meat. Hmmm…
Time passed, Ted went home and Dwight left for another facility. Gary and I became roommates in room two twenty-three. Two twenty-three was a two bed unit with a room lavatory and private water closet. The two windows faced west, afforded a nice view of the Town of Dover and a daily display of spectacular sunsets.
After a short time we moved to room two-twenty where, we spent Christmas 2020.
During Christmas, Gary and I became bosom buddies. One of the fondest memories Gary Brown laid on my heart was the Christmas tree he created from a few strings of Christmas lights which he hung on the window blinds. We watched their colors change, played Christmas music and learned of each others family life. Nice.
Therefore with this humble eulogy, I have included a photo collage of Gary’s Christmas tree and the only photo I was able to take of him. I am glad he allowed me to take it as his memory will be with me forever. Enjoy.

Gary was my brother, not my brother-in-law. His kindness and humor will always stay with me. I loved him dearly and mourn his loss. Rest in peace, my brother.
