Dr, Wachman had a profound influence on me as a middle-aged student returning to university after twenty years. Her kindness, compassion and deep erudition were an inspiration to me as I navigated my way through academic life. She encouraged me with her signature wit, and offered me not only her stellar academic guidance, but her friendship as well. I think of her often in the twenty years since I graduated, and am sorry to learn of her passing.

I am indeed so sad to learn just now of Gay's death. I once visited her with Bonnie in the facility where she was staying; it was heartbreaking but also so important to me to see Gay once more. I am sorry I didn't visit her more often. She had a tremendous influence on me when we were bot graduate students in the English Department at the CUNY Graduate Center. Gay and Bonnie even hosted a baby shower for me when I was pregnant with my daughter, now 18. I shall miss her very much. She taught me a lot about literature and life. I am so grateful to have known her for as long as I did. If there are to be any future memorials or dedications, please do let me know: Carolyn Ferrell, 908-768-0947. Yonkers, New York. Thank you.
