Obituary of Elvia Zatarain
Elvia Zatarain (née Romero), a beacon of warmth, strength, and unwavering love, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the age of 92.
Beloved wife for 66 years to the late Oscar Zatarain, Elvia was a devoted mother to Elvia C. Ruiz and her husband, Jose, and a proud and loving grandmother to Robert and his fiancée, Lindsay Carroll, and great- grandmother to Aiden and James Ruiz. She was predeceased by her cherished siblings, Orlando Romero and Berta Fouz.
Born in Chaparra, Cuba, to the late Francisca (née Cortaya) and Jose Romero, Elvia began a courageous new chapter in 1968 when she immigrated to the United States with her husband and young daughter, seeking a brighter future rooted in hope and opportunity.
As a homemaker, Elvia created more than just a home — she built a sanctuary filled with love, laughter, and the rich traditions of her Cuban heritage. Her warmth extended beyond her family; she was a spirited member of the New York Cubans Lions Club, where her kindness, generosity, and vibrant spirit touched many lives.
Elvia’s legacy is one of deep devotion to family, resilience in the face of change, and joy found in togetherness. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A visitation in Elvia’s honor will be held on Monday, March 31st, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, April 1st, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis R.C. Church.
Entombment will follow at Madonna Mausoleum, Fort Lee.
